Ms. Vimal Karpe

Managing Partner, Structures IXO Partners

Headquartered in Hong Kong, IXO Partners was founded in February 2023 by two civil engineers specialising in structural engineering (the ‘inside’) and façade design (the ‘outside’). IXO Partners provides design-for-decarbonization engineering for traditional stakeholders, governance for alignment to carbon commitments, research to advance technological and product innovations, and advisory relating to carbon target adoption and property risks in the face of a changing global climate. By leveraging significant depth and breadth of expertise across the design-through-construction-through-operation building lifecycle and by intersecting at all segments of the building industry; IXO not only ensures upstream investment decisions are practical & quantifiable but also broadens the scope for downstream decarbonization. Vimal is responsible for the ‘inside’ stream at IXO: structural design and consulting. By discipline, main structure represents majority (upto 80%) of the embodied carbon for the new build projects. It also plays a key role in building climate resilience for both existing and new buildings. Vimal’s deep understanding of structural materials, specifications, construction methodologies, material innovations and integrated design is derived from first-hand experience on local and international projects across APAC, India, UK, US and the Middle East. In Hong Kong, she advocates for sustainable urban development as a member of the Decarbonization and Resilience committee of the Urban Land Institute. Vimal advises clients on practical and actionable strategies to minimize life-cycle carbon and improve climate resilience.

Morning Breakout – IDEATE 3: The Case for Building Retrofits in Hong Kong – Overview and Case Studies

Sustainability - Overview

As Hong Kong advances towards its 2050 carbon neutrality goals, the spotlight is on the critical role of existing building retrofits and unlocking the potential of existing assets.

This is not a 'one-size-fits-all' endeavour - we will delve into the nuances of integrated retrofit strategies to address energy efficiency, occupant comfort, climate resilience and evolving market demands. From engineering considerations, innovative technologies, policy support to financing mechanisms, these dynamic sessions will ignite engaging conversations and provide fresh perspectives on future-proofing our built environment.

The Case for Building Retrofits in Hong Kong - Overview and Case Studies

Download the state of play in retrofitting in just 60 minutes! In this intense session you will get a retrofit 101, a rapid-fire sharing of case studies, and a debriefing in small groups to narrow down this complex topic.

Wed 23 Oct 1:30 PM — 2:45 PM (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Afternoon Breakout – IDEATE 3: Scaling Retrofits in Hong Kong – Panel Discussion and Interactive Roundtables

We will kick start this session with a roundup of the morning breakout on retrofits in Hong Kong, followed by a panel discussion where you will hear directly from the stakeholders themselves. Then, most importantly, ULI wants to hear from you! We will conduct focused small group roundtable discussions and end the session with a sharing of key takeaways from each group.
